What NOT to say when someone has a miscarriage

So.. i had a miscarriage at 11 weeks. It sucks and sometimes life kicks you in the nuts but you have to pick yourself up and get on with it as life does go on. And as devastating as it is, i have learned that it is common (that is not to take away from how unfair and upsetting the experience is). Friends, family and colleagues are all very supportive and try to help and make you feel better and sometimes this involves some gems like these:

"sometimes things like this is just natures way of telling you there is something wrong with you"
"it doesn't matter, you can always try again"
"It's really common, so early on it's not really a thing, just like a bad period"

And from a pregnant colleague on learning that I had miscarried "hmm, i sometimes worry when i cant feel the baby move, but then it does and then it reassures me that everything is ok".

All of this is of course meant in the nicest possible way.  I suppose its an awkward subject for people and they don't really know what to say.  But whatever you say, don't say any of the above - it'll make you come across like a twat.

Im back!

I've logged on again after a few months of not updating - lots happening and unfortunately not all good.  Sadly i suffered a miscarriage and then my grandfather died so i've been taking it very easy recently and therefore have not been updating this..

Now that i'm feeling better and getting back into the swing of things I am going to be updating this more regularly.

Postcard

Postsecret is a community art project that has grown arms and legs and now has a huge following across the world.  People anonymously mail their secret on a postcard to Frank Warren (who runs the project) and he posts a selection on his blog every Sunday. I've been following this site for years now and eagerly await new secrets every Sunday.

The Last Word

The Last Word is a part of the New Scientist magazine that I really love. It gives readers the opportunity to send in their burning science related questions and have them answered by other readers.  People ask all sorts of questions and it can make for very interesting reading.

Ever wanted to know why your eyes get dry when you get water in them? Well here's the answer

Ever wanted to know why if you sleep for longer than usual you feel more tired? Well, some clever person has the answer

There are loads and loads of questions (100's in fact) but there are questions like this which makes me wonder if some people have a little bit too much time on their hands:

If I stand still and shout a phrase, then travel twice the speed of sound in a direction, will I hear that phrase backwards?

Hhhmmmm......

Kate Middleton's Engagement Dress Could be yours for £16

Well, a copy anyway..

I'm not especially girly but even I wanted to buy the now very popular engagement dress that Kate Middleton wore. Kate's dress was made by Issa and became an instant sell-out as girls across the country snapped one up so they too could look as glamorous as Kate.

However, all is not lost.. Tesco(!) have announced that they will be selling a copy of the dress for as little as £16.. Hits Tesco stores soon..

Predictive text

If you own an iphone you will be familiar with the phones predictive text habits.  Sometimes the outcome is very funny and sometimes it's just wrong..  For those who don't have a clue what i'm talking about- from time to time, the iphone predictive text misunderstands what you type and changes the word to something totally different.  Forget the old cup/bus error from the regular phone keypad - the iphone predictive text errors reach a new level altogether.  These are some of my favourites courtesy of damnyouautocorrect.com.

Tick tock tick tock tick tock

I'm terrible, i'm always running late for things no matter how hard i try and this handy article kinda explains why as humans it's not all that straightforward for us:

How do you really know what time it is?

Would you believe that Pac Man has been around for 30 years now?

Cookies are fun to make but just think how fun Pac Man cookies would be!

Holy Cool

Buy stuff!

I think we're all guilty of a few of these..

I really like this site as it's all written, designed and maintained by one guy and most of all because it's really funny and never fails to make me laugh.  I've bought a few of his posters and they take pride of place in my apartment.

The Doghouse Diaries

First post

My first post is about a website that i really love at the moment and has kept me entertained for quite a few months now.  I love the fact that there is a new post every day about a new subject.  There are many "list" type sites on the internet but this is one of my favourites.
